The Asian small-clawed is listed as 'vulnerable.' They, and otters in general are illegal to own as pets. The person who created that video is a professional animal caretaker, and even says all that in the description. Pretty sure that you have to have a license or permit, or take some kind of class to own these kinds of animals.

Soooooo like in Slovak republic , the otter will be destroyed , no way they will save this animals. Otter lives under the Tatra moutains. But there is a higway without any fence or so, so otters are being drived over like nothing. Then fishermen hate otters, because they hunt the fish, eating them or leaving the fish not consumed. So they believe the otters are bastards or whatever. In the past the otters was nearly extinct in this nation, because of over hunting and the fact, the otter hunt the fishermens prey. This is retarted nation, evrybody loves stupid gray pooches nowaday, and cant see any difference between otter and marten or so, and think this animal is stupid and lower valuabe than woofs .

Otters were practically extirpated when our maps still said 'Czechoslovakia.' It's terrible to hear that their populations still suffer there, despite all the great progress they've made. :'c

I think I read somewhere that they were once only in one county, but now they span the entirety of Great Britain. c:

Yeah, I read a report on that a few months back, how the water quality was improving and that they were making a comeback, which was cheering to me.

These are near threatened? I read about them repopulating more cause of less pollutants and stuff

Yes, they're making a great comeback. They were once listed as "threatened," and thanks to protection laws and the reduction of pollutants, their future is looking bright. :la:

Quite nice to hear; always good to hear about a species working themselves back up from the brink of extinction. :)

From what I've heard from my family that lives in more rural area, otters are largely back, not unlike beavers; at least in Eastern Poland.

Oh, they're making a fabulous comeback in a lot of places in Europe. There are some countries, though, where they were completely eradicated from that are of greater concern. I'm sure they're returning, though, considering all the new laws protecting them and all the efforts to clean the waterways. c:

Yeah, but you know what kind of otter signs were mostly seen? Half-eaten fish lying everywhere. Apparently they kill a bit more than they can eat :P
Beavers could be even more damaging with their dams. While I don't support extinction of either species, I think their density in one area should be something to be concerned as well, not just the total number ;)

They used to be worse off, as they were once listed as "threatened." They're recovering slowly thanks to the reduction of pollutants in the waters where they live and more responsible hunting laws. Take comfort in knowing that their future is pretty bright. c:
